Types and Causes of Female Urinary Incontinence
There are two common types of urinary incontinence, stress incontinence, and urge incontinence.
Stress Incontinence
The first is stress incontinence is when you pee due to pressure on the pelvic floor. This can happen when you cough, sneeze, laugh, lift, walk, or run. It can also happen during sex.
Stress incontinence is not related to psychological stress. It has to do with the stress of pressure on the bladder and the pelvic floor.
Most common reasons for stress urinary incontinence in pelvic floor physical therapy:
- Childbirth and pregnancy can put pressure on your bladder. It can even cause trauma to your pelvic floor.
- Menopause can change your hormone levels. These changes can weaken your pelvic floor muscles.
- Pelvic surgery can weaken the muscles that support the bladder and urethra.
- Pelvic fracture or injury can also weaken pelvic floor muscles. Weak muscles can lead to incontinence.

Urge Urinary Incontinence
The second is urge urinary incontinence happens when you suddenly need to pee and then you do pee. This happens because the muscles in your bladder spasm. This can be very embarrassing.
